BACKGROUND:
First introduced in 1941 as the “Daisy Mae hat’, It was originally intended to issue these to all troops except for armored vehicle personnel, who were to be issued the HBT cap instead. However, the caps were more popular with everyone which led to the Daisey Mae being declared limited standard in 1943 and gradually phased out.
It wasnt until 1967 that the U.S. Army began issuing the modern “boonie hats”, made of cotton and wind-resistant poplin, in olive drab, tigerstripe, and ERDL pattern(Very close to M81 Woodland). It was meant to supplement and replace the patrol and baseball caps that had been in service since World War II. As the U.S. military evolved away from a garrison mentality, the boonie hat found a permanent place as part of the uniform of all services. The boonie hat has changed little through the decades since the Vietnam War and was used in the Iraq War and still in the War in Afghanistan as an alternative to the patrol cap. The U.S. military boonie hat has come in a variety of camouflage patterns, of which we are expanding upon the patterns and offering a few more!
- 65% polyester & 35% Cotton Rip-stop material. Highly comfortable.
- Head size 59-60cm. Or around 7 1/2. (1-2cm variation range is nominal). (Be aware, boonie hats are built to sit on top of the head, they DO NOT need to perfectly ‘fit’ on your head. They are built to basically be universal with the attached chin strap.
- Air vents on both sides of hat.
- Adjustable strap will tighten onto chin or lower back of the head to hold the hat firmly down.
- Reinforced brim on the front and rear.
- Map pocket on the inside top of the hat.
Built with 100% rip-stop material, The brims are stiffened in the front and rear to hold there shape better then other boonies on the market.
These are extremely high quality boonie hats built to last. We offer a full lifetime warranty on these hats. Tear them up? Your dog eats them? Color fades? Send us a message and we will fix or replace it for you!
The entire hat is covered under warranty.

Excellent quality cap. Not usa made, but that’s what happens when you want colors not offered by US makers. Having worked for OEM companies in the past, most US builders only do runs of thousands to 10’s of thousands of specific products, and most don’t see profit in offering any colors not directly used by the US military, so they just don’t build or offer them, unfortunately.
I’m highly impressed with Shepherd for acquiring these boonies and allowing us to purchase for a reasonable price. Also, their color selection of US made pouches, belts and gear are incredible and hardly seen in the US market. Much love for this company, I will be purchasing another war belt from you soon!
